Spanish Parties Continue Backing Sahrawis’ Struggle, Right to Self-Determination

Several Spanish political parties continue to support the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence, condemning the Moroccan occupation’s repressive practices, ongoing human rights violations and the illegal exploitation of Western Sahara’s resources.
In this regard, the “Together for Catalonia” party reaffirmed its support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, condemning the Spanish government’s backing of the Moroccan occupation.
According to the Sahrawi news agency SPS, the Polisario Front’s representative in Catalonia, Mohamed Salem Ahmed Laabeid, met on Tuesday at the regional parliament with Francesc de Dalmases, the foreign affairs spokesperson for the “Together for Catalonia” party and chair of the parliamentary Peace and Freedom for the Sahrawi People group.
Dalmases reaffirmed his party’s unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s just and legitimate struggle for freedom and independence, while denouncing the Spanish government’s backing of the Moroccan occupation and violations of human rights, peoples’ rights, international law, and international legitimacy.
For his part, the Polisario Front’s representative in Catalonia provided an assessment of the current situation of the Sahrawi issue during the meeting, which is part of a series of meetings the Front’s representation in the region is holding with political parties, criticizing “the prolongation of the conflict and consequently the tragedy and suffering of the Sahrawi people.” The meeting also discussed future areas of cooperation and joint preparation for upcoming initiatives to advance the national struggle and support the Sahrawi people’s fight to achieve their aspirations for freedom and independence.
“At a time when the Spanish government is abandoning democratic principles and supporting Morocco while funding its interests, we in Catalonia continue to provide full political support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination,” Dalmases said in a post following the meeting.
Several Spanish political parties have previously expressed their solidarity with the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence, calling on the Spanish government to “pursue a foreign policy consistent with these principles and with international law.” “Podemos Catalonia” renewed its support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, calling on Spanish citizens, particularly the working class and civil society organizations, to mobilize in support of the Sahrawi cause “until final victory is achieved.” The Spanish Communist Party also voiced its support for the Polisario Front, stressing its opposition to « ignoring the legitimate aspirations and sovereign will of the Sahrawi people” and reaffirming its steadfast commitment to the fight for Western Sahara’s sovereignty and dignity.
