Spain Hosts Photography Exhibition on Sahrawi Struggle and Culture

Since Monday, the Spanish city of San Sebastián has been hosting a photography exhibition titled “Sahara in Memory,” running until April 5th. Organized by the Spanish Independent Left Party in collaboration with Moving World, the event takes place at the city’s public library and showcases the work of photographer Miguel Serrano, who documented the daily lives of Sahrawi refugees displaced for nearly five decades.

The exhibition’s opening ceremony gathered key figures, including Juan Torres, spokesperson for the Independent Left Party, photographer Miguel Serrano, actor and longtime Sahrawi cause supporter Pepe Viyuela, and Khadijetou El Mokhtar, Polisario Front representative in Madrid. Local officials, journalists, artists, and solidarity activists also attended. Serrano expressed gratitude to the Sahrawi people for their hospitality during his visit to the refugee camps, where he captured their resilience.

Actor Pepe Viyuela urged Spanish political and civil society actors to acknowledge their moral responsibility toward the Sahrawi people. Meanwhile, Juan Torres reaffirmed his party’s solidarity with the Sahrawi struggle, announcing a series of events to raise awareness about the Sahrawi cause in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
