Spain: Death toll rises to three in building collapse

Three people have died and ten others have been injured in the collapse of a building due to an explosion of unknown origin that occurred from Friday night to Saturday in Santander, northern Spain, according to local authorities and emergency services.

“We must confirm the tragic death of three individuals,” stated Eugenia Gomes, head of the Cantabria region, of which Santander is the capital. A previous report had indicated one death and two people missing.

Emergency services reported that ten residents were hospitalised, with two of the injured already discharged.

The explosion took place around 4:00 AM (2:00 AM GMT) in a small residential building that was completely destroyed. “A suspected explosion triggered a fire, followed by the collapse of part of the structure,” emphasised the city’s mayor, Gema Igual, in a television interview.
