Sonelgaz to Establish 40-Megawatt Power Plant in Niger as Gift from Algeria

Algerian power company Sonelgaz Group announced on Wednesday that it would oversee the construction of a 40-megawatt power plant in Niger, which will be donated by Algeria.
This initiative is part of a memorandum of understanding signed on Wednesday in Niamey, Niger, between the public group and the Nigerien electricity company, Nigelec. The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation and partnership relations between the two entities.
The document was signed by Sonelgaz CEO Mourad Adjal and Nigelec General Director Fati Abarchi. It outlines several clauses detailing the terms of cooperation and partnership, thereby paving the way for new development opportunities that serve the mutual interests of both nations and enhance their economic standing in the region, the statement clarified.
“To bolster bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, the President of the Republic has decided to donate a 40-megawatt power plant to Niger, assisting the country in addressing challenges related to meeting its citizens’ energy needs,” Adjal stated during the signing ceremony.
The partnership and cooperation project between Sonelgaz and Nigelec also encompasses “support for the development of Niger’s electricity transmission and distribution network, as well as training assistance delivered both in-person and online in areas such as electricity production—including renewable energy—and electricity transport and distribution,” the source added.
This agreement aligns with the directives of the country’s high authorities and the conclusions of a meeting held in August 2024 between President Tebboune and the Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance of Niger, aimed at revitalizing economic relations between the two countries.
