Sonatrach Develops Ambitious Roadmap to Cut Gas Flaring to 1%

ORAN – The CEO of Sonatrach, Rachid Hachichi, emphasized on Tuesday, in Oran, that the group has developed an ambitious roadmap to cut gas flaring to 1% by 2030.

Speaking at the opening of Sonatrach’s 12th Scientific and Technical Conference (JST-12), Hachichi underlined the company’s goal to “reduce gas flaring to 1% by 2030 while cutting fugitive methane emissions at its gas facilities to under 3%.”

This move, he said, falls within the framework “of Algeria’s commitments to the recommendations of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, adopted in 2015 and ratified by our country.”

Sonatrach’s CEO also stressed that “environmental responsibility demands we cut our carbon footprint and find a balance between meeting production targets and protecting our ecosystem.”

In this respect, Sonatrach is deploying, through its new climate policy adopted in February 2025, “an efficient monitoring and control system, relying mainly on its research and development capabilities, in order to control the carbon footprint,” he underlined.
