Sonatrach CEO Stresses Strategic Role of NAPEC in Global Energy Transition

Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi, speaking at the opening of the 13th edition of the NAPEC (Africa & Mediterranean Energy & Hydrogen Exhibition and Conference), emphasized that the event has established itself as an international platform for dialogue, cooperation, and the exchange of perspectives on the future of energy, according to a statement by the Algerian energy group.

He noted that the conference has become crucial due to the challenges it addresses and the opportunities it seeks to explore. Organized under the theme “Accelerating Access to the Energy of Tomorrow and Achieving an Effective Energy Mix Through Partnership, Investment, Innovation, and Technology”, Hachichi described the gathering as both unifying and expressive, embodying a shared ambition in the global energy landscape.

Hachichi pointed out that the energy debate no longer focuses solely on availability or pricing but now encompasses access to clean, safe, and sustainable energy. He highlighted the role of modern technology in reshaping production and consumption models, stressing the importance of digitalization, artificial intelligence, and advanced data-processing technologies in streamlining processes and improving efficiency. He also underlined the relevance of carbon capture, storage, and utilization technologies, alongside investments to reduce methane emissions—a priority integrated into Sonatrach’s environmental strategy and aligned with its new climate policy.

Reaffirming Sonatrach’s reliability in natural gas supply, Hachichi maintained that gas remains an essential transitional energy, given its relatively clean profile compared to other fossil fuels and its capacity to facilitate renewable energy integration. The energy mix envisioned by Sonatrach balances reliance on oil and gas with the development of renewable sources such as green hydrogen and solar, aiming at a gradual and realistic energy transition that supports economic growth and environmental protection.
