Sonatrach CEO Meets with the SG of Gas Exporting Countries Forum

ALGIERS, March 27, 2025 – Rachid Hachichi, the CEO of Algerian oil company Sonatrach, met on Thursday in Algiers with Mohamed Hamel, the Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), as stated in a company announcement.

During their meeting at Sonatrach’s headquarters, the two leaders discussed strategies to enhance cooperation mechanisms, particularly in coordinating strategic issues on the GECF agenda. This dialogue is part of the follow-up and implementation of the conclusions drawn from the 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government, which took place in March 2024 in Algiers.

The officials also explored opportunities to strengthen the role of natural gas within the global energy mix and set future timelines that ensure the sustainability of this vital resource. They highlighted its significance for achieving sustainable development and supporting the energy transition.

Additionally, the meeting allowed for discussions regarding the Gas Research Institute (GRI), which is affiliated with the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. The GRI’s role in promoting research and development, as well as enhancing human capacity, was underscored as essential for bolstering the Forum’s global standing, especially with its upcoming convening in Algeria.

The announcement concluded by affirming Sonatrach’s commitment to Algeria’s regional and international obligations, further solidifying its status as a key player in the global gas industry.
