Slovakia Threatens to Block EU Aid to Ukraine Over Gas Transit Dispute

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has issued a stern warning to Ukrainian President Zelensky, stating that Slovakia will block European Union financial aid to Ukraine unless the Ukrainian government restores Russian gas transit through its territory.

Fico referred to Zelensky as an “enemy of Slovakia,” asserting that he only understands the “language of force” and that Bratislava’s demand is non-negotiable.

Fico’s remarks followed a failed meeting with Zelensky at the Davos summit, where the Ukrainian president did not attend but instead sent a protocol outlining Slovakia’s obligations, including support for Ukraine’s European Union and NATO membership.

However, Fico pointed out that the protocol made no mention of gas, emphasizing Slovakia’s core interest in the resumption of gas transit. According to Fico, Zelensky’s approach, which he described as presumptuous, ignored Slovakia’s concerns and obligations.
