Slovakia Seeks to Maintain Oil and Gas Transit from Russia

Slovakia has reiterated its desire to keep reliable oil and gas transit corridors from Russia, emphasizing stable prices, according to Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Blanár after his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Prime Minister Robert Fico also voiced strong support for continuing the flow of oil and gas from Russia to the West via Ukraine, despite the ongoing conflict.

The central European nation faces the risk of disruptions to these key energy supplies due to its dependence on transit pipelines running through Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia since February 2022. Ukraine has already announced it will not renew its gas transit agreement with Russia by the end of the year.

Fico acknowledged that alternative routes would be too costly and emphasized Slovakia’s interest in remaining a key transit country for energy supplies from Russia.
