Situation in Somalia: Algerian FM Takes Part in AU Peace and Security Council Ministerial Meeting

Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, took part on Tuesday in a ministerial meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council, held via videoconference and mainly devoted to discussing the situation in Somalia, according to a statement by the ministry.

The statement said the meeting focused on recent developments in the Federal Republic of Somalia, particularly the step taken by the Israeli occupation in recognizing the so-called “State of Somaliland”.

In his address, Attaf reiterated “Algeria’s condemnation of the unilateral measure taken by the Israeli occupation and its solidarity with brotherly Somalia”.

He noted that “after spreading tragedy and chaos in the Middle East, the Israeli occupation is now seeking to create a new source of tension and conflict in the Horn of Africa”.

Attaf explained that “this move constitutes a source of serious concern for Somalia, the African region and the international community as a whole, as it threatens Somalia’s efforts to strengthen national unity, risks increasing instability in the Horn of Africa, and violates the long-established African principle of respect for borders inherited at independence, as well as the fundamental principles of the international order and the United Nations Charter”.

In conclusion, the minister stressed that “recent developments require a collective commitment to strengthening African unity in the face of attempts to destabilize states and undermine their sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to defend the established principles underpinning both the African and United Nations systems”.
