SILA 2024: Special Program for 70th Algerian Liberation War Anniversary

The International Book Fair of Algiers (SILA-2024) will celebrate its 27th edition from November 6 to 16, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Liberation War. The fair will host both national and international figures who will participate in conferences organized for this occasion, as stated in a release from the Ministry of Culture and Arts.
During a coordination meeting held at the ministry’s headquarters, which was attended by ministry officials, the fair’s commissioner, and members of the organizing committee, Minister of Culture and Arts Soraya Mouloudji provided directives regarding the final program for this cultural event. She emphasized “the importance of ensuring that this edition is successful and exceptional, especially as it coincides with the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Glorious Revolution.”
The 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Glorious Liberation War (1954-2024) will be the focal point of this edition, given “the immense significance of this historical event for the nation’s memory.” Attendees will engage with history through a series of intellectual and literary conferences that focus on the November 1, 1954 Revolution and its impact on peoples around the world, featuring participation from both national and international personalities.
Additionally, the Palestinian cause will be highlighted at the fair, with several conferences exploring themes such as “Literature of Resistance in Palestine,” “Palestine in Algerian Poetry,” and “Cinema Against Zionism,” among others.
Other discussions will delve into translation, novels, literature, and intellectual thought within their African and Arab contexts, addressing topics like “Algeria-Qatar: Writings that Unite Us” and “Decolonization Issues: Western Sahara, Africa’s Last Colony.”
This edition will also pay tribute to numerous cultural and literary figures, both Algerian and foreign, according to the same source.
During the coordination meeting, the minister underscored the “necessity of achieving the objectives of this major international event, which is the most popular cultural gathering in Algeria and one of the most esteemed events in Africa, the Arab world, and the Mediterranean.”
The 27th SILA will take place from November 6 to 16, 2024, at the Exhibition Palace of the Algerian Company for Fairs and Exports (SAFEX) in Algiers, under the theme “Read to Triumph.”
