Senegal: “End of All Foreign Military Presence by 2025,” Says President

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced on Tuesday during a New Year’s address that the country will terminate all foreign military presence by 2025.

In a statement on November 28, he emphasized that France must close its military bases in Senegal.

“I have instructed the Minister of Armed Forces to develop a new doctrine for defense and security cooperation, which will include, among other measures, the cessation of all foreign military presence in Senegal by 2025,” declared Faye, who was elected in March.

This announcement marks the first time a deadline has been established for the withdrawal of foreign military bases from Senegal, a country that has historically maintained strong ties with the West.

“The friends of Senegal will be regarded as strategic partners within a framework of open, diversified, and unreserved cooperation,” the Senegalese president clarified.
