Security Council: Lasting Peace in Syria Requires Sincere, Inclusive Political Process

NEW YORK (United Nations) – The A3+ Group at the United Nations Security Council (Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, and Guyana) said on Tuesday in New York that lasting peace in Syria can only be achieved through a sincere and inclusive political process, led and carried out by Syrians themselves, in accordance with the principles enshrined in Security Council Resolution 2254.
In a statement read on behalf of the A3+ Group during a Security Council meeting on the situation in Syria, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, said that “the resilience, courage, and aspiration of the Syrian people for peace and dignity undoubtedly deserve our full and unwavering support.”
“Stability in Syria is essential not only for the Syrian people but also because it constitutes the cornerstone of security and prosperity throughout the region.”
“It is high time to support Syrians with relevant actions in favor of peace, justice, and a hopeful future throughout the region,” stressed the A3 Group in its communiqué.
“Syria’s future is closely linked to its people’s ability to coexist peacefully, as they have done for centuries, and to overcome historical grievances through dialogue, reconciliation, and mutual respect,” he added.
“Transitional justice, national reconciliation, uncovering the fate of the disappeared, and inclusive dialogue are all essential elements to heal the wounds of the Syrian people and lay the foundations for a just and fair political transition process in Syria,” he said.
He further reiterated “the strong support of the A3+ group for the sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic.”
