Security Council : Ceasefire in Gaza, Prerequisite for De-Escalation in Yemen

NEW YORK (United Nations) – Members of the A3+ group at the Security Council (Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone + Guyana) affirmed, Wednesday, that an “immediate” and “lasting” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip represented a prerequisite for de-escalating violence in Yemen, ensuring that the situation in the Palestinian enclave was closely linked to tensions in the Red Sea.
“We condemn all violations of international law and emphasize that these tensions (in Yemen) are closely linked” to the Zionist aggression against Gaza, said in New York Mohamed Rabi Yussuf, member of Somalia’s permanent mission to the UN, who was speaking on behalf of the A3+ during a meeting devoted to the situation in Yemen.
“We also emphasize the need to impose an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Not only will this help alleviate the suffering endured in the occupied Palestinian territories but will also prevent the multiplication of tensions throughout the region,” the group added.
Rabi Yussuf expressed the A3+’s “deep concern” regarding recent developments in Yemen while condemning the Zionist entity’s strikes against civilian areas in that country.
“The Security Council must support all sincere efforts in favor of de-escalation,” through the implementation of a ceasefire in Gaza, the group maintained.
“Continued international support for such an initiative is essential to ensure de-escalation and establish a credible political process in Yemen,” it affirmed.
