Scholz Urges Russia to Honor Ceasefire Commitment, Vows Continued Support for Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on Russia to uphold its pledge to a partial ceasefire in Ukraine while reaffirming the EU’s commitment to supporting Kyiv. Speaking in Brussels ahead of a European leaders’ summit, Scholz welcomed Moscow’s agreement to halt strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure but stressed that it must be fully implemented.
“There is now a first step which seems possible following the talks between the Russian President and the US President, but this must now become reality and lead to a ceasefire that truly holds,” Scholz stated. He emphasized that ensuring a lasting cessation of hostilities was critical for stability in the region.
Scholz also reaffirmed the EU’s ongoing political and military backing for Ukraine to strengthen its position in any future negotiations. He underscored the importance of Ukraine remaining independent, sovereign, and on its path toward EU integration while maintaining a strong defense even after a potential peace agreement.
