Sahrawi Organizations Demand Immediate Release of Civilian Prisoners

Sahrawi human rights organizations have renewed calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all Sahrawi civilian prisoners held in Moroccan jails, emphasizing that the struggle continues until the Sahrawi people achieve full rights to freedom, independence, and self-determination.

The calls coincided with the release of prisoners Ibrahim Babit and Salah Eddine Sabbar, who were serving unjust sentences due to their political positions and peaceful advocacy for Sahrawi rights. The Sahrawi Prisoners’ Protection Association called for the release of all political detainees and an end to judicial harassment against activists.

Rights groups stressed that these unfair sentences against Sahrawi students represent a new episode in a long-standing pattern of organized repression by Moroccan authorities. They highlighted the urgent need to end systematic violations both inside prisons and during release procedures.

The organizations also condemned the inhumane conditions of the prisoners’ release, which involved transporting them late at night, under harsh weather, and far from urban centers, describing it as part of a continuing policy of retaliation and intimidation against Sahrawi activists even after completing their sentences.

Finally, coordination bodies urged all Sahrawi national forces and communities at home and abroad to persist in peaceful mobilization and advocacy until the ultimate goal of freedom and independence across Sahrawi territory is achieved.
