SADR Reaffirms UN-OAU Settlement Plan as the Only Viable Solution for Western Sahara

The Ministry of International Relations and African Affairs of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) has reiterated that the only compromise-based, practical, and reasonable solution to the Western Sahara conflict remains the UN-OAU Settlement Plan. This response comes following the UK-Morocco Joint Communiqué, which includes a section addressing the situation in Western Sahara.

While acknowledging the UK’s clear stance of not recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and its support for the UN Charter and the right to self-determination, the SADR Ministry expressed disappointment that the UK has chosen to describe Morocco’s so-called autonomy proposal in terms inconsistent with its long-standing position. The Ministry emphasized that all international and regional bodies, including legal institutions, continue to reject Moroccan claims of sovereignty over the territory, reaffirming its status as a decolonization issue on the UN agenda since 1963.

The SADR condemned the Moroccan proposal as a colonial maneuver aimed at legitimizing an illegal occupation and suppressing the Sahrawi people’s right to independence. It also criticized any selective endorsement of this proposal as undermining the impartiality required for a genuine UN-led peace process. The Ministry warned that rewarding Morocco’s expansionist policies only deepens the current deadlock and undermines prospects for lasting peace in North Africa.

In closing, the SADR reiterated the Frente POLISARIO’s willingness to engage constructively in UN-led negotiations and urged the UK to leverage its position to promote a process that respects international law and enables the Sahrawi people to freely determine their future. The Ministry reaffirmed the Sahrawi people’s unwavering commitment to achieving freedom and full sovereignty over their land.
