Russia’s Updated Nuclear Policy Puts US and NATO in Strategic Stalemate,Intel Chief

Russia’s updated nuclear deterrence policy, which expands the grounds for using nuclear weapons, effectively removes the possibility of defeating Russia on the battlefield, according to Sergei Naryshkin, Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR).

The new decree, released by Russia on Tuesday, outlines key principles of the country’s nuclear policy, including the potential for a nuclear response to massive aerial attacks, including those using cruise missiles and drones.

Naryshkin emphasized that the West’s cautious reaction to President Putin’s amendments signals their understanding that these changes undermine the efforts of the US and NATO to strategically defeat Russia. He noted that the expanded list of nuclear deterrence grounds limits the possibility of victory over Russian forces, urging greater restraint in relations with Russia to avoid catastrophic conflict.
