Russian Researchers Demonstrate Effectiveness of Therapeutic Diet for Genitourinary Cancer Patients

Researchers from Russia’s Saratov State Medical University (SGMU) have conducted a study demonstrating the effectiveness of a specialized therapeutic diet for patients with genitourinary cancers, such as kidney, bladder, and prostate cancer. The study, presented at the Week of Russian Science (WeRuS-2024), showed that incorporating specialized nutritional mixtures, or “sippings,” significantly improved patients’ quality of life and reduced treatment costs and hospital stays.
Cancer patients often suffer from nutritional deficiencies, with over 80% experiencing insufficient intake of essential nutrients necessary for proper body function, a critical issue during treatment. To address these deficiencies, the SGMU researchers developed balanced nutritional mixtures specifically designed to replenish vital nutrients. The study involved 30 patients, split into two groups : one receiving nutritional support through sippings post-surgery, and a control group that did not receive supplementation.
The results revealed a 50% reduction in postoperative complications for patients who received the nutritional mixtures, as well as faster wound healing and improved management of their conditions. Additionally, there was a lower risk of metabolic complications, leading to a three-day reduction in the average length of hospital stay. Conversely, patients in the control group showed a higher incidence of gastrointestinal disorders, occurring in 86.5% of cases. SGMU researchers are now exploring broader applications of the product for various patient groups.
