Russia Warns West Over “Oreshnik” Missile Test, Urges Halt to Support for Ukraine

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov addressed several significant global issues, including the recent test of Russia’s “Oreshnik” ballistic missile, and issued a stern warning to Western nations in light of the ongoing Ukrainian crisis. The missile test is seen as a direct message to the West, particularly regarding continued arms shipments to Ukraine and its military engagements.
Ryabkov made it clear that the Russian government wants an immediate cessation of Western military support for Ukraine, stating, “The message is very clear and straightforward: stop. Do not supply Kiev with everything they want, do not encourage them into new military adventures.” He emphasized that further escalation could risk turning the conflict into a larger global war, warning that the West is dangerously close to becoming full participants in the conflict by backing Ukraine.
In his remarks, Ryabkov also reiterated Russia’s commitment to existing arms control agreements, specifically with the United States, regarding missile test launches. He confirmed that the necessary communication channels for notification between Russia and the U.S. are still operational, but he also cautioned that Western nations seem to believe they can achieve a strategic victory over Russia, an assumption he described as deeply flawed.
Ryabkov’s comments reflect growing tensions as the conflict in Ukraine enters its second year, with both sides entrenched in a bitter struggle. The missile test serves as a reminder of Russia’s military capabilities and its willingness to escalate the situation further if it deems Western actions to be harmful to its interests. As the situation continues to evolve, the role of international diplomacy remains crucial in preventing further escalation.
