Russia Says Ensforcing Any Future Iran Nuclear Deal Is a “Complex Task”

Russia’s Foreign Ministry has said that ensuring the smooth implementation of any future agreement on Iran’s nuclear file would be a “complex task,” citing lessons learned from the experience of the previous Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Oleg Postnikov, Deputy Director of the Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control at the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that any progress in this regard would be welcomed. However, he stressed that the JCPOA experience showed it is not enough to merely reach an agreement, but also essential to guarantee its uninterrupted implementation while maintaining a delicate and verifiable balance of interests.

Postnikov noted that Moscow believes a settlement of the crisis surrounding Iran’s nuclear program is “entirely achievable,” provided there is sufficient political will from all parties involved. He expressed confidence that past lessons would be carefully taken into account.

He added that the most important issue is for Iran’s adversaries and opponents to finally reach a level of political maturity that allows for genuine negotiations over the aspects they claim to be concerned about in Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, without guidance or dictates shaped by the failed and long-discredited policy of “maximum pressure,” and without attempts to impose discriminatory demands on Tehran.
