Russia: President Putin issues nuclear warning to U.S following missile decision

MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a warning to the United States on Tuesday, lowering the threshold for a nuclear strike, after the administration of Joe Biden reportedly allowed Ukraine to fire American missiles deep into Russia.

The updated nuclear doctrine, formally known as “The basics of state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence,” outlines the threats that would make Russia, the world’s biggest nuclear power, resort to such weapons.

These threats encompass any aggression against Russia’s territorial integrity or that of its allies through the use of conventional weapons.

The previous doctrine, set out in a 2020 decree, said Russia may use nuclear weapons in case of a nuclear attack by an enemy or a conventional attack that threatened the existence of the state.

Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden issued a decision allowing Ukraine to use U.S.-made weapons to strike deep into Russia, according to Reuters, citing two U.S. officials.

The sources indicated that the potential strikes will be carried out using ATACMS rockets, which have a range of up to 190 miles (306 km).

Together, Russia and the U.S. control 88% of the world’s nuclear warheads.
