Russia Deploys Submarine to Escort Tanker Pursued by US Forces Amid Atlantic Standoff

Tensions between the United States and Russia have escalated as Moscow reportedly deployed a submarine and additional naval vessels to escort a sanctioned oil tanker being pursued by US forces across the Atlantic, according to multiple reports. The vessel, formerly known as the Bella‑1, has been the subject of an extended chase after refusing to comply with a US blockade of sanctioned tankers near Venezuela.
The tanker, now renamed Marinera and sailing under the Russian flag, is accused of attempting to evade US sanctions by changing its registry and avoiding boarding attempts by the US Coast Guard. The pursuit has carried the ship into the North Atlantic, south of Iceland, where US maritime and air assets have monitored its movements.
Washington’s efforts to seize the tanker, viewed as part of broader enforcement of sanctions targeting Venezuelan and Iranian oil shipments, have been met with firm opposition from Russia. Moscow has said it is tracking the situation with concern and indicated that the tanker is operating legally under international maritime law. The Russian escort deployment highlights the growing geopolitical stakes and the potential for a direct confrontation between US and Russian military forces at sea, adding pressure to already strained bilateral relations.
