Russia Calls for a New Security and Economic Cooperation System in Eurasia

Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin emphasized the need to establish a new, fair security and economic cooperation system on the Eurasian continent in his New Year address on Tuesday.

He acknowledged the progress made so far but underscored the necessity for further efforts in response to global crises and instability, which should serve as a catalyst for deeper cooperation among nations facing common challenges.

Kopyrkin assessed the state of Russian-Armenian relations, highlighting the significant strides made to overcome obstacles in their alliance and strategic partnership. He noted that the two countries maintain dialogue at all levels, including governmental, parliamentary, and judicial bodies.

The ambassador pointed out recent developments, such as the mid-December meeting between Moscow and Yerevan’s intergovernmental commission, where several key agreements were signed. Additionally, cooperation within joint integration platforms, particularly within the Eurasian Economic Union, continues to flourish in 2024.

Emphasizing Russia’s role in fostering stability in the South Caucasus, Kopyrkin also touched upon Moscow’s efforts to mediate relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He referred to the significant progress made in peace negotiations, particularly those conducted during the BRICS summit in Kazan.

Looking ahead, Kopyrkin expressed Russia’s commitment to supporting Armenia and Azerbaijan in achieving a comprehensive agreement, specifically to facilitate the unblocking of critical transportation routes in the region.
