Russia and North Korea are preparing to begin construction of a road bridge connecting the two countries, Moscow’s ambassador to Pyongyang, Aleksandr Matsegora, announced on Thursday. He described the project as the most significant bilateral infrastructure development in decades.
Matsegora stated that while construction has yet to start, both nations are finalizing design plans, assembling construction teams, and completing necessary preparations. The bridge is part of a broader strategic partnership agreement signed in June 2024 during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea—his first in 24 years. The two countries share a 17-kilometer land border along the Tumen River, which also borders China.
The ambassador also noted that North Korea welcomed Russia’s renewed diplomatic contacts with the US, with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoygu briefing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on recent discussions. He emphasized that these engagements would not affect the deep strategic ties between Moscow and Pyongyang.
