Romania’s New Coalition Government Wins Parliamentary Confidence

Romania’s new coalition government, led by Social Democratic Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, secured a parliamentary vote of confidence on Tuesday. The new government was approved by a majority of 240 votes against 143.
The pro-European coalition includes the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the centrist Liberal Party (PNL), and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), along with minority representatives, giving the alliance control of approximately 54% of parliamentary seats. Meanwhile, three far-right and nationalist parties hold around 35% of the seats following parliamentary elections earlier this month.
The government faces the challenge of navigating a difficult economic year, compounded by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, political strife, and corruption allegations that have eroded support for mainstream parties.
The coalition has committed to reform and investment while preparing for upcoming presidential elections under a two-round voting system. The three coalition parties have agreed to back a unified candidate to block far-right victories, with Crin Antonescu, former Liberal Party leader, as their current choice.
Prime Minister Ciolacu emphasized his administration’s focus on social and economic justice, stating, “This government must be one of reforms and investment.”
