“Robbing Peter to Pay Paul”, Attaf Criticizes France’s Decision

The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, criticized France’s recognition of Morocco’s alleged sovereignty over Western Sahara, describing it as “Robbing Peter to pay Paul”.

During a press conference at the Ministry’s headquarters, Mr. Attaf elaborated on France’s decision, characterizing it as ‘a step that can be succinctly summarized by the phrase “Robbing Peter to pay Paul” which encapsulates the legal value of this recognition.’

Mr. Attaf further stated that “by considering the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole solution for the Western Sahara issue, France is dismissing efforts to seek an alternative resolution in accordance with international decisions, particularly the United Nations Security Council resolutions that France itself has helped formulate and adopt.”

On Tuesday, Algeria decided to recall its ambassador from France in response to France’s endorsement of the autonomy plan for Western Sahara as the sole solution to the longstanding dispute.
