Record Turnout in South Korea’s Early Presidential Voting

Early voting for South Korea’s upcoming presidential election, scheduled for June 3, continued on Friday with participation levels on track to break records, according to local media reports.

“The second day of the two-day early voting began at 6 a.m. (local time). By 11 a.m., over 10 million of the 44.3 million registered voters had already cast their ballots, bringing the turnout to 24.55%,” the National Election Commission reported.

On Thursday, the country recorded the highest first-day turnout for early voting since its nationwide introduction in 2014. A total of 19.58% of eligible voters participated, setting a new record.

To facilitate the process, the election commission set up 3,568 polling stations across the country. Early voting concludes Friday at 6 p.m. local time.

Six candidates are running for the presidency, but the race is primarily between Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party (DP) and Kim Moon-soo of the ruling People Power Party (PPP).
