President Xi Urges China, UK to Jointly Uphold True Multilateralism

China’s President Xi Jinping on Thursday called on China and the United Kingdom (UK), as supporters of multilateralism and free trade, to “jointly uphold and practice true multilateralism,” asserting that his country “will never pose a threat to other countries.” Xi made the remarks during his meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who is visiting Beijing, adding that international law “can only be truly effective when all countries respect it.” “Major countries must take the initiative first, otherwise the world risks falling back into the law of the jungle,” the Chinese president noted.

President Xi further emphasized that “China will never pose a threat to other countries, regardless of its growth and development.” He also highlighted China’s commitment to peaceful development, recalling that his country has never instigated war nor occupied a single inch of foreign territory.
