Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune addressed participants at the African Ministerial Conference on Local Pharmaceutical Production and Health Technologies on Thursday, with his message read by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb. The event, hosted by Algeria at the request of the World Health Organization, recognizes the country’s achievements and reforms in the pharmaceutical sector.
In his message, President Tebboune noted that Algeria is home to over one-third of the continent’s pharmaceutical establishments, with around 230 out of 649 African factories located in the country, alongside more than 100 new projects under development. He emphasized that Algeria has designated the pharmaceutical industry as a strategic sector and a national priority to strengthen health security, including the creation of a dedicated ministry.
Highlighting Algeria’s commitment to continental development, Tebboune stressed that hosting the conference reflects the country’s vision of an integrated Africa. He added that the “Algiers Declaration,” which will conclude the conference, aims to serve as a pact among African nations to make the continent self-sufficient in the production of its medicines.
