President Pezeshkian: Iran will not give up peaceful nuclear technology

Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian reaffirmed that his country would not abandon its “peaceful” nuclear technology, media reported Wednesday.President Pezeshkian spoke after the second round of indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington on Iran’s nuclear program in Geneva.

“Iran is ready to prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear program. We have announced on several occasions that we are not seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, in accordance with the policies defined and a religious decree issued by the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei,” Pezeshkian said, adding that “the country is ready to submit to any verification measures in this regard.” He stressed that Iran will not accept being denied the use of nuclear science and technology to treat patients and develop its industry and agriculture.

President Pezeshkian’s remarks came amid strong tensions between Tehran and Washington, which is strengthening its military presence in West Asia.

Iran and the United States held the second round of indirect negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program on Tuesday in Geneva. The negotiations took place at the Omani embassy in the Swiss city and were conducted under the mediation of Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi.

The first round of indirect negotiations had been held on February 6 in the Omani capital, Muscat.

Iran’s FM Abbas Araghchi noted that this second round of talks took place in a “more constructive” atmosphere than the previous session held in Oman, indicating that both sides had reached an understanding on the primary “guiding principles” to be incorporated into the text of a potential agreement.

“This does not mean that we can reach an agreement quickly, but at least the path forward is now clear,” Araghchi concluded.
