President Petro: ‘A Pact for Freedom, a Pact for Life, Can Be Made’ After Talks With Trump

Colombian President Gustavo Petro described his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House as “optimistic and positive,” highlighting areas of cooperation despite significant policy differences. The talks, which lasted around two hours, focused on combating drug trafficking, energy collaboration, and the situation in Venezuela—issues that have previously strained relations between Washington and Bogotá. Petro emphasized that while approaches may vary, both sides are united by shared commitments to freedom and constructive dialogue.

Petro told reporters that discussions covered the need to pursue drug trafficking capital and explore ways to counter narcotics networks, as well as potential energy initiatives, including reactivating Venezuela’s economy through regional cooperation. He also spoke about lifting sanctions on Venezuela and strengthening economic and diplomatic ties along the Colombia–Venezuela border. The Colombian leader stressed that these talks reflected mutual respect and a willingness to seek common ground, even amid differing perspectives.

Reflecting on the encounter, Petro highlighted the importance of pursuing a “pact for life and freedom” that could bridge divides and foster a more collaborative future for both countries and the wider region. He also noted the need for continued cooperation with the United States on issues of mutual concern, framing the meeting as a potential turning point in bilateral relations after months of tension.
