Pope Leo XIV Praises Algeria’s Resilience and Calls for Unity in Landmark Address at Riadh El Feth Square

Pope Leo XIV delivered a major address at Riadh El Feth Square in Algiers before delegations gathered to welcome him, in a moment marked by strong symbolism and diplomatic significance.
In his speech, the pontiff described Algeria as “a noble country with a deep-rooted history,” emphasizing that its rich traditions date back to the time of Augustine of Hippo and even earlier. He highlighted the country’s historical depth and cultural richness as key elements of its national identity.
Pope Leo XIV also acknowledged the hardships Algeria has faced, noting that its history has known pain and periods of violence. However, he praised the Algerian people for overcoming these challenges “with honor and courage,” underlining their resilience and strength.
He further stressed that Algeria stands as a land where cultures and religions meet, affirming that mutual respect is the essential path that allows peoples to move forward together. The Pope framed this principle as central to peace and coexistence in today’s world.
Concluding his remarks, Pope Leo XIV expressed hope that Algeria—strong in its roots and driven by the aspirations of its youth—will continue to contribute to strengthening stability and promoting dialogue within the international community, particularly across both shores of the Mediterranean.
