Polisario Front Submits Expanded Self-Determination Proposal to UN Chief

The Polisario Front on Monday submitted an expanded proposal to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, describing it as a “gesture of goodwill” and a response to recent UN Security Council resolutions urging both parties to move forward toward a political solution in Western Sahara.
The proposal, titled “Proposal of the Frente POLISARIO for a mutually acceptable political solution that provides for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara and restores regional peace and stability,” was sent as the Security Council prepares to renew the mandate of the UN mission in the area (MINURSO).
In his letter, Sahrawi President and Polisario leader Brahim Ghali recalled that the movement had first presented its plan in April 2007, which the Council acknowledged in Resolution 1754. The updated proposal reaffirms the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination through a referendum supervised by the United Nations and the African Union, and expresses readiness to negotiate with Morocco “to establish strategic and mutually beneficial relations.”
Ghali said the Polisario was willing to “share the costs of peace” if Morocco demonstrated similar political will, stressing that a just and lasting settlement “remains possible” with genuine commitment to move beyond the current stalemate.
He reiterated the Front’s readiness to hold “direct and serious negotiations” with Morocco, under UN auspices and without preconditions, to achieve a peaceful resolution ensuring self-determination for the Sahrawi people and regional stability.
