Poland Joins France to Block EU-Mercosur Trade Deal Over Farmers’ Concerns

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced Tuesday that Poland would not accept the EU’s free trade agreement with the Mercosur bloc, citing concerns over the impact on Polish farmers and food security. Tusk joined France in forming a blocking minority against the deal, which involves Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The agreement, finalized in 2019, has faced opposition from several EU countries due to competition fears.

Poland’s government adopted a resolution opposing the deal, with Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stating that diplomatic efforts are underway to rally at least four EU member states to block its ratification. The trade pact, which Polish farmers argue could harm sectors like poultry, beef, and sugar, has sparked protests, including demonstrations at the Ukrainian border. France has also voiced strong opposition, calling for a firm rejection of the agreement in its current form.
