Peru to Declare State of Emergency in Lima amid Security Crisis

The Peruvian government will declare a state of emergency in the capital, Lima, in response to a worsening security crisis, Prime Minister Ernesto Alvarez announced Friday.
“Due to the wave of crime affecting the population, we will announce the government’s decision to declare a state of emergency, at least in the Lima metropolitan area,” Alvarez said during a press conference.
The security situation in Peru has deteriorated sharply in recent years, with rising crime and instability eroding public confidence in institutions.
In March 2025, Parliament passed a motion of censure against Interior Minister Juan José Santiváñez over the surge in criminal activity. Two months later, then–Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzén resigned amid the same crisis.
President Dina Boluarte, who took office in December 2022 following the ouster of Pedro Castillo, has faced mounting challenges in restoring order. She is the third Peruvian president removed or replaced in the past five years, following Martín Vizcarra (impeached in November 2020) and Pedro Kuczynski (who resigned in March 2018 to avoid impeachment).
