Peru: Record Number of Candidates for April Presidential Election

A record 34 political parties have registered a candidate for the 12 April presidential election in Peru, the National Elections Jury (JNE) said late Tuesday.

At the close of registration on Tuesday at 23:59 (04:59 GMT), “34 political organizations submitted registration requests for their presidential tickets,” the JNE said on its television channel, referring to the country’s highest electoral authority.

The final list of candidates will be published no later than 14 March.

The parties also submitted their lists of candidates for the Congress (130 deputies and 60 senators) and the Andean Parliament (5 representatives), whose elections are scheduled for the same day.

Among the main figures seeking the presidency, Rafael López Aliaga of Renovación Popular (right-wing), who recently survived a shooting attack, leads early polls with about 10% voter intention.

Also on the right, Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), will attempt for the fourth consecutive time, at age 50, to win a victory that has always eluded her in the second round. She leads Fuerza Popular, the main group in the current Congress.

In previous elections, 23 candidates registered in 2021, 19 in 2016, and 10 in 2011, making this year’s field notably larger.

This huge number of parties filing candidates reflects a broad and crowded electoral landscape ahead of Peru’s 2026 general elections.
