Peru Breaks Diplomatic Relations with Mexico

The Peruvian government announced Monday that it is severing diplomatic relations with Mexico. The decision was declared by Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela at a press conference.

“In response to this unfriendly act and taking into account the repeated occasions in which the current and former presidents of that country (Mexico) have interfered in the internal affairs of Peru, the Peruvian government has decided today to break diplomatic relations with Mexico,” He stated.

The announcement follows Mexico’s decision to grant asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who is under investigation in Peru for her alleged role in a failed coup attempt in December 2022.

Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Ministry responded that “Mexico rejects Peru’s unilateral decision as excessive and disproportionate in response to a legitimate act by Mexico consistent with international law, which in no way constitutes intervention in Peru’s internal affairs.”
