Parliament of Navarra Backs United Nations Process on Western Sahara Self-Determination

The 29th Conference of the Joint Parliamentary Groups “Peace and Freedom for the People of Western Sahara,” held over two days at the Parliament of Navarra, adopted a declaration supporting the United Nations-led political process aimed at achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution guaranteeing the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, according to the parliament’s official website.

The conference called on the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to expand its mandate to include monitoring, promoting, and protecting human rights. It also urged the United Nations Human Rights Council to appoint a Special Rapporteur for Western Sahara.

In its final declaration, the conference reaffirmed its recognition of the Polisario Front as the sole legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people. Participants also denounced the illegitimacy of Morocco’s presence in Western Sahara, calling for an end to the occupation and for enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence.

The parliamentary groups further demanded the immediate release of Sahrawi political prisoners and an end to the systematic human rights violations in the occupied territories. They emphasized the importance of parliamentary monitoring missions and called for their continuation throughout 2026.

The conference also rejected any economic or trade agreements that undermine the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and condemned the exploitation of natural resources in the territory. It was announced that the 30th Conference of the Joint Parliamentary Groups “Peace and Freedom for the People of Western Sahara” will take place in the Canary Islands in 2027.
