Paris Olympics : Imane Khelif of Algeria becomes the first Arab and African woman to win the boxing Olympic gold

The Algerian boxer wins the welterweight fight and holds the gold after a series of online bullying

PARIS – Following a thrilling bout between Algeria’s Imane Khelif, and China’s Yang Liu, Khelif managed to achieve a well-deserved victory at the Paris Olympics.

Khelif (66 kg) defeated Yang Liu of China 5:0 in the final of the women’s welterweight division Friday evening, corronating her boxing career with a gold after a series of remarkable fights at Roland Garros.

Algerian supporters at home and abroad celebrated her triumph, as she was subject to frantic defamation campaign, ignited moreover by her Italian and Hungarian rivals after their defeat.

The Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, congratulated Imane through his account on X, saying “We are proud of our Olympic champion Imane Khelif, your victory today is the victory of all Algeria.”

“I’ve been dreaming and preparing for the Olympics for eight years, so did my family and my little village, thank God it wasn’t in vain,” Khelif told Al24News after winning the fight.

“As for those who attacked me, I would like to tell them that I’m a strong woman with exceptional capacities, and I thank God for this medal,” she added.

“The President has been my biggest supporter as he promised me to secure all that I need to win, and here I am holding the gold… this is the medal of honour to Arabs and Muslims around the world,” Khelif told the same source.

It is noteworthy that the bullying campaign amplified by prominent western figures has unfolded with scenes of carnage and genocide against women in Gaza by the Zionist occupation in the backdrop, while the international community remains silent.
