Pakistan: Supreme Court Grants Bail to Former Prime Minister Imran Khan

Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Thursday granted bail to jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan in multiple cases linked to attacks on military installations during the May 2023 unrest, according to court documents and his lawyer.
A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi accepted Khan’s appeal against a Lahore High Court ruling that had rejected his bail pleas in eight cases tied to the violence. The court ordered the 72-year-old leader’s release, provided he is not wanted in any other case.
Despite the ruling, Khan will remain in prison due to a conviction in a separate corruption case. The former cricketer-turned-politician faces numerous charges, including corruption and terrorism, which he dismisses as politically motivated. Several members of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, including opposition lawmakers, have also been convicted in similar cases. The unrest in May 2023 saw protesters storm key military sites, including the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, following Khan’s brief arrest.
