Ongoing Blackout in Spain and Portugal Could Last 6 to 10 Hours

Spain’s national energy provider, Red Electrica, announced Monday that the ongoing blackout affecting Spain, Portugal, and parts of France could last 6 to 10 hours. The outage, described as “exceptional and totally extraordinary,” began around midday, disrupting transportation and services across the Iberian Peninsula.

While power restoration efforts are underway, with progress in the north and south of the region, the cause of the outage remains unknown. Authorities, including Spain’s National Institute for Cybersecurity, are investigating the possibility of a cyberattack.

In response, the Spanish government convened an emergency meeting, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and several ministers in attendance.
