Nigeria: Meteorologists’ Strike Disrupts Dozens of Flights

A strike initiated this week by employees of Nigeria’s meteorological agency (NiMet), who are seeking improved working conditions, grounded dozens of flights in Africa’s most populous country on Thursday before the action was suspended.

A spokesperson for the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, announced the suspension of the strike via social media after meeting with several unions in the sector on Thursday.

The strike, launched by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, compelled at least two national airlines, including the largest, Air Peace, to cancel all their domestic flights scheduled for that day. According to its website, Air Peace services over 20 domestic destinations, 10 regional locations, and several international routes, including those to Europe.

However, other airlines were able to operate flights on Thursday morning, and a source at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos reported that international flights had taken off late Wednesday night into Thursday.
