Nigeria: Five New Deaths from Lassa Fever Confirmed by Authorities

LAGOS, March 12, 2025 – Nigerian health authorities have confirmed five additional fatalities attributed to Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic fever endemic to West Africa, according to local media reports on Wednesday.

“We have recorded 236 new suspected cases of Lassa fever in recent days, along with 29 new confirmed cases and five new deaths across 13 states in Nigeria,” stated the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in a communiqué cited by the media.

Despite ongoing efforts by health authorities to contain the outbreak, Lassa fever continues to spread throughout Nigeria.

The disease is primarily transmitted through contact with infected rodents, contaminated food, or interaction with healthcare workers attending to infected patients. Symptoms can range from fever and headaches to severe muscle pain.
