Nigeria: At Least 37 People Killed in Northeast Attack

Boko Haram terrorists launched a motorcycle assault on a village in northeastern Nigeria, opening fire on a market and setting shops and homes ablaze, resulting in the deaths of at least 37 individuals, media reports indicated on Tuesday.
The attack took place on Sunday afternoon in Yobe, one of the three states that have endured Boko Haram violence for the past 15 years. During this period, thousands of Nigerians have lost their lives, and over two million have been displaced, according to Nigerian authorities.
Dungus Abdulkarim, spokesperson for the Yobe police, was quoted as saying, “After shooting at the market and burning buildings, the attackers pursued other residents into the bush and killed them.”
A military official, also cited by media outlets, noted that “the road leading to the village had been rigged with explosives, which troops successfully defused.” The official added, “We recovered 37 bodies and transported them to Babangida General Hospital.”
Local sources referenced by the media indicated that “the death toll could be even higher, as villagers remain missing and are likely dead after being hunted down in the bush by the assailants.”
