Nigeria: At Least 10 People Killed by Armed Men in Central Region

At least ten individuals have been reported dead following an attack by armed assailants in the village of Ruwi, situated in north-central Nigeria, a region that has frequently experienced intercommunal violence, local sources confirmed on Friday.

During the night between Thursday and Friday, unidentified attackers “entered the community firing shots and killed 10 people,” reported Moses John, a traditional leader in Ruwi.

“Three additional individuals were injured and taken to the hospital. I cannot provide specific details about the reasons behind the attack,” said Joshua Maren, a resident of Ruwi who corroborated the death toll.

Alfred Alabo, a spokesperson for the Plateau State police, confirmed the attack in a press release on Friday but did not disclose the number of casualties.

“The command center received reports that unidentified armed criminals invaded the village of Ruwi around 9:20 PM and began shooting indiscriminately,” Alabo stated.

“As a result, some law-abiding citizens who were attending a wake to mourn their loved ones tragically lost their lives, while others sustained varying degrees of injury,” he added.

Joyce Ramnap, the Plateau State Commissioner for Information, and Communication called for a prompt investigation in a statement to “track down the perpetrators of these heinous crimes and bring justice to the victims.”

Plateau State has witnessed multiple attacks in recent months. In May, approximately forty people were killed and homes were set ablaze by armed men on motorcycles in the Wase constituency.
