Nigeria : Almost 700 Nigerians arrested in two days as protests continue

ABUJA – The Nigerian Police announced that they have arrested nearly 700 people in two days of protests against the dire economic situation and escalating cost of living.
A total of 681 people were arrested, the police announced in a press release, accusing protestors of “criminal offences such as armed robbery, arson, disorder, and destruction of public and private property.”
In the capital Abuja, the police used tear gas against a group of demonstrators in front of the stadium, according to local media.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took office in May 2023 and adopted certain economic policies. Accordingly, Nigeria has been mired in economic strain ever since.
