Niger: Six Deaths Due to Cholera in the Tahoua Region

At least six people have succumbed to cholera in Niger’s Tahoua region, according to the country’s official news agency (ANP).
“The epidemiological situation in the Tahoua region, marked by a cholera outbreak, is extremely alarming: 160 cases and 6 deaths have been reported since the disease first emerged on September 6, 2024, in the health districts of Bouza, Konni, and Madaoua,” the Nigerien news agency reported on Thursday, summarizing the findings from a meeting of the regional health committee.
“If the situation persists, we risk being overwhelmed,” warned Abdoul Moumouni Abdoulaye, the regional health director, as cited by the agency.
In light of this, there have been calls for the community to adopt hygiene measures and for the media to play a role in raising awareness about preventing the spread of the disease.
Cholera is one of the most prevalent contagious diseases in Niger, resulting in significant loss of life each year. In 2023, there were 206 reported cases, including 21 fatalities.
