Nearly 100,000 People Flee Sudan’s El-Fasher Due to RSF Atrocities (UN)

More than 99,000 Sudanese civilians have been displaced from El-Fasher in western Sudan since the city was seized by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), in conflict with the government army, on 26 October, the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.

In a statement picked up by media, the UN agency said that its displacement-tracking system had recorded 10,236 new people who fled the city between 9 and 12 November, bringing the total to 99,128 displaced persons.

The IOM stressed that “these figures remain preliminary, as the situation is still unstable and displacement is accelerating as insecurity continues.” The displaced have taken refuge in several places, particularly El-Fasher, Tawila, and Kutum, in North Darfur.

Field teams reported “severe insecurity along key roads,” which could hamper movement. The organization warned that the situation is “tense and unpredictable due to ongoing fighting and population movements.”

The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed at least 40,000 people and displaced nearly 12 million, according to the World Health Organization.
