NBA roundup: DeMar DeRozan, Bulls hand Jazz first loss of season

DeMar DeRozan led all scorers with 32 points, including a late game-clinching dunk, to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 107-99 home victory against the Utah Jazz on Saturday night.

The Jazz rallied to make it a game after falling behind by 17 points, but just didn’t have enough to overcome the Bulls in the final minute and sustained first loss of the season. Their 4-0 start had been Utah’s best since the 2006-07 season.

Zach LaVine scored 26, Nikola Vucevic contributed 16 points with 12 rebounds, and Lonzo Ball added 11 points as the Bulls rebounded from their first loss of the young season to win for the fifth time in six games.

Donovan Mitchell topped Utah with 30 points, including 22 in the first half although he shot just 3-for-15 in the second, and Rudy Gobert amassed 17 points, 19 rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Jazz. Jordan Clarkson chipped in with 16 points off the bench, while Bojan Bogdanovic added 14 points.

Wizards 115, Celtics 112 (2 OT)

Bradley Beal scored a game-high 36 points, Montrezl Harrell and Kyle Kuzma both recorded double-doubles, and Washington defeated visiting Boston in double-overtime to match its best start since the 2005-06 season. Harrell scored 20 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Kuzma grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds and scored three of his 17 points on a jumper from the corner with 2:19 left in regulation that broke a 96-96 tie.

Jaylen Brown scored a team-high 34 points, including four late in regulation to help force overtime, although Washington held him scoreless in the two extra sessions. Jayson Tatum added 27, though on 10-for-32 shooting, and grabbed a team-high 15 rebounds in Boston’s second loss to Washington in as many games.

Heat 129, Grizzlies 103

Jimmy Butler scored a game-high 27 points as tired and short-handed Miami still managed to defeat host Memphis. Grizzlies superstar point guard Ja Morant, who entered the game averaging an NBA-best 30.4 points to go with 7.8 assists while shooting 40.6 percent on 3-pointers, was held to 20 points and seven assists. He made just one of his four 3-pointers.

Butler made 8-of-12 shots from the floor and added seven assists, five rebounds and three steals. Miami also got 22 points off the bench from Tyler Herro and 15 points and a game-high eight assists from veteran point guard Kyle Lowry, who enjoyed his best game of the young season.

Pistons 110, Magic 103

Jerami Grant had 22 points and host Detroit overcame a spotty debut by Cade Cunningham to collect its first victory of the season at the expense of Orlando. Cunningham, the top pick in the draft, missed the first four games with an ankle injury. He played 19 minutes, mostly in the first half, and shot 1-for-8 from the field while scoring two points. He also had seven rebounds and two assists.

Kelly Olynyk contributed 18 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Josh Jackson tossed in 13 points with seven rebounds for Detroit. Saddiq Bey also had 13 points and seven rebounds. Franz Wagner, the eighth pick in this year’s draft, led Orlando with a season-high 19 points. Cole Anthony supplied 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Knicks 123, Pelicans 117

RJ Barrett scored a career-high 35 points to lead six New York scorers in double figures in beating short-handed host New Orleans. Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker added 19 points each, Taj Gibson had 13 and Julius Randle and Alec Burks had 10 each as the Knicks won for the fifth time in six games.

New Orleans lost for the sixth time in seven games as Brandon Ingram (hip contusion) joined Zion Williamson (foot surgery) on the sideline. The Pelicans closed within three points early in the third quarter, but Barrett had five points and an assist during a 10-0 Knicks run.
